REPORTING · 1st February 2016
Walter McFarlane
Kitimat was host to an atom / novice hockey tournament on the 15th, 16th and 17th of January. This is the first time this tournament has been held in town in the last couple of years.

“We try to run it every year,” Sharmin Chalkins who organized the event. “We attempted to run one in 2012, it didn’t work out because there were no accommodations. Now that we have accommodations, I think we’ll be able to have one every year again.”

Teams came from Prince Rupert, Terrace, Hazelton and Kitimat, with Kitimat holding two of each team. The Novice teams are 7-8 year olds and the Atoms are 9-10.

In the end, the Prince Rupert team won the Atoms Tournament. There were no finals for the Novice Tournament so everyone won.

Chalkins told us finding volunteers was easy, as most of the parents stepped up to help. She thanked all the sponsors and the volunteers and hoped the tournament would get bigger next year.
