NEWS RELEASE · 12th November 2015
Walter McFarlane
The 2nd Light Up Kitimat Event will be taking place on Sunday, November 29th from 5-7 pm in the courthouse parking lot. In accordance with the event, the organizers are asking the residents of Kitimat to light up their houses by that time.

“We’re working on making this year’s event bigger then it was last year because last year was our first Light up Kitimat Event,” said Trish Parsons, Executive Director. “Bring the kids down, and the kids can have hot dogs. We’re working on having a letter to Santa Booth.”

People are asked to park in the veterinary side parking lot and walk down ‘Candy Cane Lane’ to the Courthouse Parking lot where the booths are going to be set up.

The event is free and brings out different businesses and organizations as partners. Santa will be showing up and they are working to have a comfortable chair for him and the children to sit in. Companies will be doing displays of lights.

One of the goals is to show how there is much more to do in Kitimat during the winter, during the festive season.

“There has been lots of focus on the Fire Hall Tree which is basically a community tree,” said Parsons . “We’ve accepted that that tree, where it’s located, there is a huge wind corridor there.”

She explained there was a lot of work done by the fire fighters, but a big wind would cause the lights to go out. Last year, Light up Kitimat tried to light up the tree with steel cables. This year, the group wished to put a tree topper on the tree. However, it was discovered the cables caused the top of the tree to break off.

Parsons expressed they have looked at other places which they could light up. There is not enough wiring in Centennial Park, and future parks need to make certain they are properly equipped with wiring so they could play host to events which require lighting.
