REPORTING · 10th September 2015
Walter McFarlane
It was raining, but this did not damping the spirits of the people who came out to enjoy the Labour Day Picnic on Monday, September 7th, hosted by Unifor 2301. Burgers and Hotdogs were on the Barbecue and there were fun activities for the children.

“This is our Annual Labour day Picnic,” said Sean O’Driscoll, Unifor 2301 President. “It’s an event that we’ve sponsored in conjunction with the Kitimat Terrace District Labour Council to commemorate all the statutory holiday and the important role that labour plays in our society.”

Robin Austin and Nathan Cullen were out. In addition, Past President Rick Belmont, members of Canada Post and members of the BCGAU were there to enjoy a burger.

This is the first Labour Day Picnic with O’Driscoll as president, although he has been an executive officer for many years. He stated the transition into the new smelter is busy and they see a lot of challenges.

“[Rio Tinto] is proving in a lot of cases to be a difficult employer to work with, but having said that, we are always prepared to resolve any issues in the workplace,” said O’Driscoll.

He thanked all the people who put the event together and make it a fun family event.
