With summer nearing its end, the time draws near for the 28TH Annual Kitimat Fishing Derby. The Derby will run on Saturday and Sunday, September 5th and 6th. Tickets are available at Bradley’s Bait and Tackle and at the Chamber of Commerce.
“[We have] lots of prizes. Huge support from the Chamber Business community. Lots of our Chamber members are a part of the Fish Derby. That’s what makes it so successful. In order to conserve fish, it’s not about hidden weights or anything, anyone who buys a ticket, they are eligible to win one of the many random prize draws,” said Trish Parsons, Executive Director of the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce.
Prizes will be $1000 for the largest Coho caught over all. There will be rod and reel prizes for the largest Coho caught by a youth, a man and a lady. There are a lot of prizes this year. They gave away 100 prizes last year and they are on target to give away the same amount, if not more, this year.
In addition to the Fishing Derby, there will be a scavenger hunt which people can use to test their knowledge of history and unique places Kitimat. There are ten clues.
On Sunday, at the Chamber of Commerce, fish fest will be taking place from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm. There will be food, music and games for the children.
“In order to encourage people to park at the upper City Centre parking lot, they can catch the shuttle bus and ride it up to the Visitors Centre and enjoy the festivities up here, because we do have limited parking, even along Forest Avenue. […] They get to put their name into a draw and we draw for three prizes,” said Parsons.
If you plan on weighing in a Coho, the deadline for buying your ticket is the day before you weigh it in.
Parsons would like to thank all of the sponsors for this year’s event.
