Councillor Rob Goffinet moved a motion to write a letter to Queen Elizabeth to recognize her title as Longest Reigning Monarch in modern times, which will occur on Thursday, September 9th, and hold a celebration in Centennial Park.

“Queen Elizabeth the 2nd’s reign is almost the entire history of Kitimat as a community. She was coronated in 53, we were incorporated in 53. In 54, her husband was at the first hot metal pouring at the Alcan smelter. She has visited Canada multiple times over 62 years of work, and one of them in 1959 was to Terrace, I learned that Queensway was actually named after the queen,” said Goffinet.

He expressed this was a sign of recognition and respect for a wonderful lady.

CAO Warren Waycheshen explained it would be a small ceremony. Goffinet told the Council there were over 80 communities in the Countrywho would be observing the commemoration. He said there would be a structure to the ceremony, most likely, the letter to the Queen would be read.

The motion was called and carried.
