NEWS RELEASE · 3rd July 2015
District of Kitimat
District of Kitimat Fire Department along with Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations (FLNRO) personnel has been tackling a forest fire which began during the day of July 01, 2015.
Currently FLNRO has a small crew fighting the fire but plans to increase it to a team of 20 firefighters by morning. The fire is in very difficult terrain and is proving difficult to suppress. Due to its location, aid by helicopter was deemed inefficient. FLNRO is anticipating they will be there for approximately 5 days.
We are urging people to avoid areas in and around the fire due to ongoing suppression activities. Smoke may become an issue because of changing wind directions. We are also asking that, due to extremely dry forest fuel conditions and the high risk of fire, recreationalists are urged to exercise extreme caution.
We would like to remind everyone that there is a complete fire ban in effect that includes camp fires.
