Douglas Channel LNG was in Kitimat on Tuesday, June 23rd to hold an open house to keep the residents of Kitimat up to speed on the progress their project is making.

“Douglas Channel LNG is a floating LNG Project that’s on District Lot 99, just off Bisch Road and we’re looking to do about 0.55 million tonnes of LNG export per year to Asia,” said Sandra Semple, Senior Advisor, External Communications.

They acquired the project on January 28th of this year and are looking for a Final Investment Decision by the end of the year. They hope to have their first shipment of LNG in 2018. They are not sure how many people their project would employ at this time. They know there will be jobs in Construction and Operational jobs.

“We have all the pieces in place. The Haisla Nation are our land lords so we have a land and water lease agreement with the Haisla. We have an existing pipeline so all we need to do is build an 8 kilometre spur from the PNG Pipeline to our project,” said Semple.

They expect, once their pipeline is in place, rates for people using gas from the PNG Pipeline will decrease. Semple explained rates are high right now because the PNG Pipeline is not full. When the capacity is full, the ratepayers will see a benefit.
