Rick Belmont, who was the President of the Unifor 2301 union, formerly, CAW 2301, retired from Alcan at the beginning of June. He worked for Rio Tinto Alcan for 34 years, and spent 15 years as union president.
“I’m going to enjoy my retirement,” said Belmont. “I’m only a few days into it and I can get used to this real quick.”
Belmont has left quite a legacy in the union, a legacy which has had an impact on Kitimat. Belmont has negotiated the last five collective agreements as spokesperson. He expressed in his first set of bargaining, they managed to negotiate a pension increase, which was previously non-negotiable.
He explained he has worked with a lot of good activists over the years, many of whom are no longer with us.
The union held their election in May and the new executive was sworn in on the 27th of that month. Sean O Driscoll is the new president. Belmont still plans to be active in the union, the retirees chapter.
