It is Camões week in Kitimat. On Sunday, May 31st, the Luso Canadian Association, along with Mayor Phil Germuth and former Mayor, Joanne Monaghan, raised the flag at the Public Safety Building.
“Today is the beginning of the Portuguese week, it’s the celebration of our famous poet, Luis Camões. We start off with the raising of our national flag,” said Anna Cabral.
The flag rising was followed by a lunch of barbecued sardines or chicken. There are many activities going on throughout the week. People are welcome to visit the club, play some cards and learn about the Portuguese.
On Saturday Night, there will be a dinner and dance with two artists from Massachusetts. On Sunday, there will be a mass held for all the Portuguese in the community who have passed away, along with anyone else who has passed away. They will be going to the cemetery to lay some flowers for the Portuguese community.
