The Kitimat Fire Department was called out to Wedeene Street for a structure fire on Saturday, May 9th. They determined the fire had started in a mattress.
“On Saturday, we received a call to 47 Wedeene Street for a structure fire. When we showed up on scene, the occupants were out of the building already. There was smoke coming from the second story window. Crews made entry to find a mattress was on fire which they quickly extinguished,” said Derek Collier, Deputy Chief of Operations.
The mattress was removed from the premises and the smoke was cleared using a high powered fan. Nine fire fighters, including two chief officers were called out. The investigation to what caused the fire is ongoing.
As always, the Fire department is reminding people to check their smoke detectors monthly and replace the batteries annually.
In addition: “Ensure all smoking materials are properly disposed of and out of children’s reach,” said Collier.
