The Nechako Toastmasters held an open house on Saturday, April 25th.
“We’re having a promotional meeting to raise the profile of Toastmasters, so, with a little added interest, we might, with luck, find a member or two,” said Nechako Toastmaster President, Reg Barnes.
He explained the Toastmasters teaches public speaking, and teach people to gain confidence in public speaking. They function to make leaders as leaders need to communicate, whether it be a coach for a team, a leader of a family, a crew leader, foreman or manager.
There were two guest speakers, Cyril Sukare, a Distinguished Toastmaster, and Tom Meyer, a former Toast Master who was involved locally with the Chamber of Commerce.
Sukare used to be the president of the Chamber of Commerce in Salmon Arm. He got involved in Toastmasters to upgrade his speaking skills in order to communicate effectively.
“It’s an ongoing process that does not happen overnight and this is the best platform where you can learn to do that because it’s a no pressure situation with no deadlines. We go by your pace and your learning objectives,” said Sukare.
Toastmasters meet on the first and third Thursday of each month. Their next meeting is on the 7th of May. To join, contact Barnes at 250-639-4010 or show up at the next meeting at 7:00 at the Kitimat General Hospital’s Multipurpose Room.
