REPORTING · 12th February 2015
Kitimat City Council for Monday, February 10th began with an update from Acting Mayor Mario Feldhoff concerning the recent Snow Storm. It is transcribed below.
I would like to thank everyone for their patients and compassion during the worst snowstorm we’ve seen in years. Extreme snowfall in just a couple of days, combined with power outages, made it very challenging. I appreciate the frustration experienced by many waiting for the power to return and street to be cleared.
At the same time, there was a heightened sense of community as a result of this event. The people pulled together, not only to help each other out, but also our Haisla Neighbours when they required assistance.
Ensuring public safety is always our top priority. I wish to offer special thanks to District of Kitimat employees who worked hard over long hours to keep up with snow. Thanks to contractors and industry who helped out as well. Thanks to the staff at Riverlodge for accommodating the Haisla Members on Sunday. Thanks to Search and Rescue and the Snowmobile Club for assisting us in our response, who provided emergency services in event we needed help accessing hard to reach places.
I have no doubt missed people to thank. Thank you to everyone for your patience and support and helping one another out, whether it is pulling a car out of the road or helping shovel or snow blow a neighbour’s driveway.
I can assure you there will be a thorough review about how the District of Kitimat handled the storm and how we can do things better.
I for one never want to repeat what we went through.
Again to the citizens of Kitimat, thank you for your patience and we look like we’re getting back to normal, slowly but steady.
Thank you again.
