REPORTING · 26th January 2015
Walter McFarlane
On Saturday, January 24th, the Winter Festival D’hiver held its annual Maple Syrup Brunch. There was plenty of delicious French Canadian Food to go around, Pancakes, Eggs, Beans, Ham and, of course, Maple Syrup.

Acting Mayor Edwin Empinado was present to welcome everyone on behalf of Kitimat Mayor and Council.

“I’d say [things went] very well. I’d say as good as last year. We would have liked to see more people,” said Patrick Witwicki from the Association des Francophones et Francophiles du Nord-Ouest.

He stated the weather for the Winter Festival worked against them this year due to the cancelation of the Rail Jam, as there was not much in the way of Winter.

Witwicki suggested they are going to discuss having the Brunch on a Sunday next year, or perhaps hold the festival in February 2016 so stay tuned for further information.

He thanked all the sponsors for making this year’s Winterfest a reality, including the District of Kitimat, Heritage Canada and Overwaitea Foods.

The winner of the grand prize trip for two from Hawkair was Mary Charlebois from Hazelton.

“Without those supporters in the community, it would be really tough to pull this off,” said Witwicki.
