REPORTING · 18th January 2015
Walter McFarlane
Coming up next weekend is the annual Winter Festival D’hiver for 2015 put on by the Association des Francophones et Francophiles du Nord-Ouest. The events include a meet and greet, a dance and the Winterfest Brunch.

The event kicks off on Thursday the 22nd of January with a social at Rosarios which starts at 7:00 Pm. It will have live music.

“The social is our chance to officially kick off the event, and also do some last minute publicity,” said Patrick Witwicki, “Live acoustic music, prizes, and the chance (if people want) to socialize in French (or English, or any other language for that matter!)“

On Friday the 23rd, there is the Snow Hope Dance Party, featuring Axes of Ego at the Legion Hall. It starts at 9:00 Pm and there is a $5 cover. No minors.

“Axes of Ego are from Hazelton, and they play a mixture of classic rock, country, and a little bit of folk. Most of their acoustic folk songs, however, will be reserved for Saturday, as they are also providing us with an acoustic set at the Winterfest Brunch on the Saturday,” said Witwicki

Originally, the Annual Rail Jam was supposed to be a part of the action. However, it was cancelled. The District of Kitimat determined there was not enough snow in the parking lot and they would not be able to haul snow from anywhere else.

Why snow hope: “instead of “there’s no hope for snow this year,” we came up with the Snow Hope,” said Witwicki.

On Saturday, January 24th, the Winterfest Brunch takes place at Riverlodge from 12:00 noon until 2Pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for 6-12 year olds and tickets for 3-5 year olds are $5.

“All of our food items are made from scratch with fresh ingredients, including les tortieres (meat pies), tartes aux sucres (sugar pies), potatoes, beans in maple syrup, and hopefully, le Creton (which is similar to a patée). We will also host our toffee on the snow booth during the event,” said Witwicki.

Witwicki gave thanks for the support from Heritage Canada, The District of Kitimat and Hawkair. They are still looking for volunteers for Saturdays event. If you would like to volunteer, contact AFFNO at affno,,,
