REPORTING · 22nd November 2014
Walter McFarlane
The Kitimat Homeless Shelter opened on Monday, November 17th at the Mountain View Alliance Church. Birgit Manninen and Michelle Martins are co-operating it.

“We’re open from 8:00 Pm to 8:00 Am 7 days a week so there is no stipulation about what the weather is, we’re just open,” said Manninen. It will run until the end of March.

It has not been used yet but this gives them time to work out the kinks to better serve the community. It is directed towards men, because there is no support for men in the community. Women and children will be directed to the transition house first.

“The winter is coming on a lot colder this year than last year and the housing crisis has taken effect a lot more since last winter,” said Martins.

There are about a dozen volunteers at the moment. If you are interested in volunteering, contact the Child Development Centre and they will put you in touch.
