COMMENTARY · 15th November 2014
Walter McFarlane
I think there should be a mug with Joanne’s picture on it with the words underneath it: What Would Mayor Monaghan do. The question is one I’ve been pondering since about April.

I don’t know much about Monaghan’s time on Council. I only sat through one year with her as a Councillor and six with her as Mayor. However, I think I can answer the question.

“What Would Mayor Monaghan Do?” She would go out of her way to make someone else’s life better. Her phone was always on. There are tales of her opening up her house, and her yard to people who needed it, working hard to help them out of the tough situations life threw at them.

Sometimes, I wish there were more people in the world who would go out of their way to help out others. I hope Joanne will still be there for the people of Kitimat.

Joanne, I’d like to take the time to thank you for everything you have done for Kitimat and I wish you well in your retirement. I hope to see you out there working for the community.
A Salute

Great editorial Walter! I agree with you - Joanne has been an exceptional Kitimat supporter over many decades, and the people in Kitimat should be grateful for her dedication. I hope she remains active in the community in other aspects besides on Council. It certainly will be a change of pace for her, but she deserves the acknowledgement of the longest serving elected official in Kitimat. I wish her good health and good luck in her future endeavors.

Those were very nice words Walter. Whether or not you agreed with Ms Monaghan, she dedicated many years to this town. She should be proud of what she accomplished.
