At 09:00 hours the current situation in regards to the forest fire located 2 km south of Kitimat near the Kitimat River is:
The fire remains contained and forestry crews will be conducting a dangerous tree assessment followed by extinguishment of any active hot spots
Kitimat Fire Department members maintained a fire watch throughout the night
The total size of the fire has been estimated at approximately 1 hectare
It has been determined that the fire was caused by an unattended camp fire
Kitimat residents may experience the smell of smoke for the next few days due to low cloud
Winds have subsided and rain is expected for the next few days which will help the situation
As a final note, the public is reminded to ensure that all camp fires are monitored and
properly extinguished. A camp fire ban is in effect until further notice. Please refer to the BC Wild Fire website at http://bcwildfire.ca
