One of important things which happens every Canada Day is the presentation of the Recognition of Distinction Awards, where member of the community who have achieved athletic successes and the people who give their time to make Kitimat a better place are recognized. Mayor Joanne Monaghan gave out the awards.

Robert and Dianna Buller were recognized for the hours they volunteered to start up and run the Army Cadets program. John Denholme was recognized for the volunteer work he did for the Kitimat Food Bank.

John Sorenson was recognized for 19 years of after school supporting learning and 17 years with Kitimat Minor Hockey. Murray Minchin was recognized for his work on Douglas Channel Watch. Barb Hall was recognized for her work in recycling in Kitimat and being President of Kitimat Understanding the Environment.

Seniors who participated in the BC Seniors games were recognized for their medals. Joe Martyres and Ron Adam were recognized for social bridge. Eileen Kraven won Silver in 5 Pin Bowling. Rena Hummel and Lisa Stumpf won gold in Lady’s Double Darts. Howard Smith, Larry Blackmore and Tony Abriel received silver in Men’s 55+ Curling. Anne Berrisford received silver in golf.

The final award went to Duncan Peacock for over 10 years with Kitimat Marine Search and Rescue.
