Kitimat City Council saw a presentation by the Summer Students at the Kitimat Emergency Awareness Program on Monday, June 16th. They were at the meeting to outline their summer program.
“What we’re going to do this summer is we’re giving free home fire safety assessments as well as tours of the Fire Hall and Fire Safety Presentations at Schools and throughout the community. We also do sports day activities as well as going to events such as Riverlodge’s Summer Kickoff,” said Jennifer Brousseau.
They will be doing information sessions throughout the summer and teaching people how to be fire safe. Last year, there were 79 homes assessed and 72 in 2012. The summer students will be checking to see if people have a working smoke detector or fire extinguisher in their house. Last year, they found a number of people did not have a working fire extinguisher.
They help people make escape plans for their houses so if there is a fire, they can get out safely. They give safety tips and assess fire hazards.
Their goal is to assess 80 homes, canvas 55 streets and try to make everyone fire safe.
Councillor Rob Goffinet wanted to know if they gave out advice on where to get safety equipment such as fire extinguishers. He was told people who have their homes assessed receive a coupon for 20% off of safety equipment at Acklands and a pamphlet on how to use fire extinguishers.
Better signs on homes.

Many times I have been given an address and end up missing the numbers on a house because they are so old or obscured by a tree or a hedge or the number on the house is just not there. I realize if there is a fire probably it will be noticed but what is there is an emergency and the ambulance is called. It must be so frustrating for the ambulance driver.
A few years ago Terrace Fire Dept. did a promotion to purchase a sign just like the ones the District uses for street signs, which reflect when headlights shine on them. I realize not all homes would like one of these signs but there should be a standard of size and colour. For everyone to take a good look at your house from the street, can you see the number on your house.
