REPORTING · 10th June 2014
It is Camões week again in Kitimat. The Portuguese flag was raised alongside the Canadian at the Public Safety Building on Sunday, June 8th.
“We ask the Mayor and Council to recognize this as the Portuguese week, in remembrance of all the Portuguese that are here and what we’re all about,” said Anna Cabral.
Normally, alongside the raising of the flag, there is a special sardine lunch at the Luso Canadian Club. However, because of the celebration of the Holy Spirit at the Catholic Church, they are going to that.
There will be a dance on Saturday, June 14th with artist Joey Medeiros from California who has won all kinds of awards. He plays Portuguese style music.
The Portuguese Culture is prominent in Kitimat. Mayor Joanne Monaghan was on hand to say a few words about how integral they are to the community and thanked them for sharing their heritage.
“It is wonderful how Kitimat has embraced the Portuguese Community and allowed us to continue with our traditions,” said Cabral. She stated that people from all nationalities are member of their club showing how strong Kitimat’s multicultural heritage is.
Monaghan expressed she was talking to the Portuguese Government about working with the District of Kitimat to put up a monument to the Portuguese people to Kitimat because they have played an important role in the community of Kitimat.
