UPDATED JUNE 7TH: RCMP PRESS RELEASE
On Friday June 6th 2014 at 2:39 pm the Kitimat RCMP responded to a 2 vehicle serious injury collision 17 kilometers north of Kitimat on Highway 37.
A motorcycle travelling northbound on Highway 37 just under the speed limit prompted 2 northbound vehicles to overtake the motorcycle. A four door sedan was in the oncoming lane of traffic overtaking a pick-up truck when the pick-up truck turned into the oncoming lane in attempts to overtake the motorcycle and collided with the four door sedan. The driver of the pick-up truck lost control and went off road right down an embankment and into a swamp.
The driver of the sedan managed to maintain control of her vehicle. The male passenger of the pick-up truck was seriously injured and the Kitimat Fire and Rescue used the “jaws of life” to remove him from the vehicle. The male passenger a 48 year old resident of Kitimat was transported by air ambulance to a hospital in Vancouver.
The highway remained closed until 5:05 pm when it was open to single lane alternating traffic. The highway was opened completely at 8:12 pm.
The Kitimat RCMP would like to thank the public who stopped and provided assistance, the Kitimat Fire and Rescue Service for their efforts and the motorists on Highway 37 for their patience.
