REPORTING · 7th May 2014
Kitimat High School Students will be participating in a cultural exchange. This year, on May 8th, two students will be arriving from Tarantino in Northern Italy. In the summer of 2015, several students from Kitimat will be traveling to Italy.
“There will be two students, age 17, both female arriving here on the 8th of May along with at least 2 teachers, 1 male, 1 female. They will be spending a day in the high school. One of them will be interested in Student Council, another one of the students, very interested in environmental issues,” said Reid Nelson.
The students will be touring Kitimat and seeing what this community is all about. The teachers are working on plans to introduce them to the local industries and local leadership.
Kitimat plans to send a contingent of about a dozen people. Teachers and community leaders plan on accompanying local students to Italy in 2015 for the other part of the cultural exchange.
The exchange was first proposed by John Allsop. On a trip to Italy, he suggested that students from the country may want to visit Kitimat. The students, upon hearing about Enbridge and other projects which are coming to Kitimat thought of Allsop and contacted him.
