NEWS RELEASE · 22nd April 2014
The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) has announced that strike activity will commence by their members in all B.C. school districts on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. In accordance with the 2014 Essential Services Order issued by the Labour Relations Board, teachers must continue to provide services designated as essential.

During phase one of this strike you need to be aware of the following information:

Teachers will not be supervising students before school, at recess or after school. Supervision duties will be performed by non-union district staff, as well as by school principals and vice principals, and some teachers in more rural areas where there is no district staff available.

Schools will start approximately 10-15 minutes later than usual in the morning and go straight through the day without recess. This decision has not been taken lightly, however without teachers to supervise during recess it is the solution that we have experienced to be the safest and least disruptive to student learning.

The Bus Schedules have been adjusted to reflect later pick-up times in the morning only by 10 minutes.

Revised Bell and Bus Schedules (as provided below) are being distributed today and are also available on the school district website. Questions can best be answered by calling your child’s school.

Revised CMSD82 2013-2014 Bell Schedule – April 23, 2014

Revised CMSD82 Kitimat-Cable Car Bus Schedules – April 23, 2014

Revised CMSD82 Hazelton-Kitwanga Bus Schedules – April 23, 2014

Revised CMSD82 Terrace-Thornhill Bus Schedules – April 23, 2014

In general, schools have supervision in place 10 minutes before the first bell in the morning and for 10 minutes after dismissal. Please help us to ensure the safety of your children by having them arrive and leave school when supervision is in place for them.

While the school district will attempt to operate as normally as possible during this difficult time, there are some initiatives that will not go ahead as planned or have a revised timeline, due to the fact that teachers will not be meeting with administration as long as the strike continues and teacher input is critical to the work. These include:

Hazelton-Kitwanga Grade Reconfiguration Committee

- No meetings until the strike ends, possible revision to the September 2015 implementation timeline depending on the length of the strike.

Kitimat City High Relocation Transition Team

- No meetings until the strike ends, definite revision of September 2014 implementation timeline to September 2015.

School Calendar Long Term Planning Committee

- No meetings until the strike ends, timeline to create a calendar projecting three years into the future after 2014/2015 remains in place.

As the strike progresses disruptions could also occur to other district initiatives. Schools will communicate directly with affected parents should this take place.
