ENBRIDGE NORTHERN GATEWAY NON-BINDING PLEBISCITE UNOFFICIAL RESULTS AND STATEMENT FROM MAYOR MONAGHAN
KITIMAT – The District of Kitimat has released the following unofficial results from the non-binding plebiscite on the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project:
YES 1,278 (41.6%)
NO 1,793 (58.4%)
More detailed information, including voter turnout, will be released with the official results in the coming days.
“The people have spoken. That’s what we wanted - it’s a democratic process,” said Mayor Joanne Monaghan. “We’ll be talking about this Monday night at Council, and then we’ll go from there with whatever Council decides.”
Persons 18 years of age or older who have resided in the District of Kitimat for at least 30 days immediately preceding voting day were eligible to vote. Eligible voters were asked the following question:
Do you support the final report recommendations of the Joint Review Panel (JRP) of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and National Energy Board, that the Enbridge Northern Gateway project be approved, subject to 209 conditions set out in Volume 2 of the JRP's final report?
Advance voting opportunities took place April 2 and 9, along with mail and special voting opportunities.
Conducting a plebiscite fulfills a January 16, 2012 Council resolution to survey residents of Kitimat following the conclusion of the Joint Review Panel process for the project.
