The Viewpoint Apartments came up at Council on Monday, March 17th for approval of the development Permit. Councillor Mary Murphy made a motion to approve the permit to replace the siding of all 8 of the buildings provided they are completed within two years.
Councillor Mario Feldhoff stated the permit is for the replacement of the exterior siding within two years. He wanted to know why they did not have to be done three years. City Planner Gwen Sewell replied Council could modify it. Feldhoff put forward an amendment to change two to three.
“With construction seasons and weather and what have you, the proponent may have every intention of [being done] in two years, that way it gives them a little more time, a little more flexibility, and we won’t have them come back to us if two years isn’t long enough,” said Feldhoff.
The amendment was called and carried.
Councillor Corinne Scott wanted to know why the housing committee’s comments were not taken into consideration. They wanted to make sure rooms were available to the tenants during the renovations and only two buildings were renovated at a time.
City Planner Gwen Sewell replied these were only applicable to interior renovations, and the permit was for renovating the exterior. Changing the siding does not displace residents from the apartments.
The motion was called and carried.
