NEWS RELEASE · 24th January 2014
District of Kitimat
Over several January meetings, Council discussed and approved specifics for a non-binding plebiscite on the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project.
Advance voting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 9 at the Tamitik Jubilee Sports Complex. General voting will take place Saturday, April 12 at Tamitik and Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School (cafeteria). Voting hours will be 8 am to 8 pm on all days. Mail and special voting opportunities will also be available.
Below is the wording of the ballot question, approved by Council at the January 13, 2014 Committee of the Whole Meeting:
Do you support the final report recommendations of the Joint Review Panel (JRP) of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and National Energy Board, that the Enbridge Northern Gateway project be approved, subject to 209 conditions set out in Volume 2 of the JRP's final report?
Answer choices for the above question shall be: Yes, No, Undecided.
No additional questions will be included on the ballot, as resolved by Council at the January 20, 2014 Regular Meeting.
Conducting a plebiscite fulfills a January 16, 2012 Council resolution to survey the residents of Kitimat following the conclusion of the Joint Review Panel process for the project. The JRP released its final report on December 19, 2013. The full document can be accessed via the panel's website.
Councils "Perifrastic" Art on Plebscite wording
Comment by Leon Dumstrey-SooS on 25th January 2014
To the Editor
Listening and reading on the subject I am still shaking my head in disbelieve. It hurts!
I am not sure if many of you remembers old TV series-"MUPPETS and "LAUGH IN"?
Let us begin with the wording on the Plebescite, which in fact consists of TWO DIFFERENT SUBJECTS: ENBRIDGE PIPE LINE PROJECT and JPR REPORT! (One wonders how the "EXPERTS" in wording missed this?)
I thought that the issue we have as a Community is
former and therefore We the People should be able to give simple YES or NO answer on a simple and inteligent question:DO YOU SUPPORT ENBRIDGE PIPE LINE PROJECT? NOT JPR REPORT which is SEPARATE ISSUE! (I like to comend those in Council as well as Sentinels Editor, that agree with this).
Is anyone surprised why our MUPPETS choose PLEBISCITE over REFERENDUM?
REFERENDUM represents a process where The PEOPLE MAKE DECISSION for INABILITY and INCOMPETENCE of GOVERNING BODIES and the RESULT IS BINDING!
PLEBISCITE is not BINDING thus gives in fact an ESCAPE ROUTE to GOVERNING BODIES ,confirming THEIR INABILITY and INOMPETENCE!
Those among the MUPPETS that suggest reading of JRP REPORT, that Community is SPLIT on the subject, more meeteengs on the wording etc., just proves my point.
For those less informed who wish to watch local "LAUGH IN" series, the show is available on cable CH IO every second Monday. Please attend and view regularly as there are rumours , that the cast and sript for show may change this November!
