A Public Information took place on January 9th at the Hirsch Creek Golf and Winter Club so the District of Kitimat could hear public comment for the construction of several townhouses on Baxter Street, in the spot where the apartment burned to the ground several years ago.

Leonard with Kerkhoff construction, the company will be building the townhouses, expressed that, at the moment, these are the only multifamily dwellings being built in Kitimat and they are not as boxy as the current apartments and townhouses. Also, their stacked nature makes them unique. The plan is to have three buildings with eight units and two buildings with six.

“[Stacked townhouses] means that you have a townhouse stacked over another town house, which is unusual. Most townhouses are side by side by side and they don’t have anybody living above them,” said Leonard.

Essentially, a section of the town house will have three doors on the lower floor. The lower floor consists of a two bedroom, two bathroom, townhouse. The other two doors lead to stairs going up to the second story where there are two more two story, two bedroom, two bathroom town houses which make up the second and third floor.

The Townhouses have between 900 square feet and 1000 square feet. There is no wasted space in the apartments.

They are still working on the design and the price of the units. As they make their way through the zoning permit stage, they will be working out the pricing and plan on having a marketing launch in the coming months. The buildings are expected to be built by spring 2015.

While this is going to be nice to have more housing available has anyone thought to make some of these 3 bedroom units?

will these be low income housing ?
