The First Annual Haisla Polar Bear Swim took place at the Kitamaat Village Boat Launch at noon on New Year’s Day. Spectators and participants from Kitamaat Village and Kitimat came out to enjoy the cold water and a great way to start off the New Year.

“I never saw anything posted on any Polar Bear Swim in town, as I usually go to it every year so I decided to put one on,” said Trevor Amos.

It started with a post on Facebook which grew and there was a better turn out than expected. Slightly over a dozen people and one dog took the New Year’s plunge. There was hot chocolate and hot dogs to warm up with afterwards.

When asked how the water was, participants responded with short answers like: ‘Cold,’ ‘Wet’ and ‘Cold… Numbing Cold.”

Amos hopes this event will grow in the coming years. Next year, he hopes to be better organized as this year, it was thrown together. He thanked everyone for coming.
