Kitimat Leisure Services once again put on First Night on December 31st, 2013. The Sam Lindsay Aquatic Centre and the Tamitik Arena were packed with swimmers and skaters respectively, as families came together to celebrate the impending New Year.

“We’ve got free swimming and free skating going on for the families and it’s a lot of fun,” said Shaun O’Neill, who was enjoying the festivities with his family. “The most important thing is fun, and family participation and intermingling of the generations which has happened here tonight, it’s been great.”

The games of the evening included shinny hockey games led by the rink marshals and the slide marshals were interacting with the children and families as well. One of the games of the evening was a trivia challenge which was based on highlights of 2013 both in Kitimat and abroad. The grand prize was a IPod Mini.

Approximately 150 people had been on the ice by 7:00 and the same amount was expected in the pool. Some people told us they were doing both swimming and skating.

The party ended at nine, so parents could celebrate with their children before going on to other parties which were going on around town.
