Kitimat Ice Demons
Kitimat Ice Demons holding tryouts at Tamitik this week as team prepares for the CIHL 2013-14 season

It's that time again ... as the Kitimat Ice Demons Senior Men's AA hockey team starts preparing for the 2013-14 Central Interior Hockey League season. The Ice Demons will be entering its 12th season in the league and are again hoping to ice a strong team, with a large proportion of the existing core group of players expected to return.

Official tryouts for the team will be held at Tamitik Arena on Sept. 9 and 10, (9.15 - 10.30 p.m., to be followed by two inter-squad games On Sept. 12 and 14. The Sept. 12 game is scheduled to start at 9.15 and the game on Sept. 14 will face off at 7.30.

Participants in the tryouts will be required to pay $30 at the first [practice to help alleviate the cost of ice time. There is a minimum age limit - 18 years unless cleared with manager Terry Marleau (632-7378) or head coach Cliff Madsen (639-9881).

Fans are welcome at all practice and inter-squad games. Coach Madsen reminds participants that the try-outs are full contact hockey.

"I'm looking forward, from what I've heard ahead of the tryouts, for there to be a lot of competition for forward line sports - but we may be challenged a little with our defensive line-up as a result of a couple of team retirements (including long-time defenseman, Dave Venman, but there's always a surprise of two when the players show up to try out. And we're not sure what additional talent might be available from contract and project workers in town -- who will also be welcome at our tryouts and inter-squad games," Madsen said.

The Kitimat Ice Demons will start to 2013-14 CIHL season on home ice, with perennial rivals, the Terrace River Kings the first opponents for the new season. Both team had close games last season, with the Ice Demons winning three of four and losing on home ice to Terrace on Dec. 7, 2012 by a close score of 5-4. Kitimat also despatched the River Kings in the playoffs in two games winning 4-3 on home ice on Jan. 26 and eliminating Terrace in a hard-fought game, 7-4 on Feb. 2.

The opening weekend will be a double header, with Quesnel Kangaroos, who start their season in Prince Rupert on Saturday, providing opposition for a 1.00 p.m. start, the first of three Sunday games Ice Demons will play.

The Demons then go on the road playing in Prince Rupert on Oct. 12 and against the Houston Luckies in Houston on Oct. 19. The away trip winds down Oct. 20 when the Demons will be in Smithers to play last season's league champions, the Steelheads.
