Just in time for July, a display of photographs of the History of Kitimat was set up in the Mall by the Kitimat Museum and Archives. The photos were up on Friday June 28th.
“The District of Kitimat, because it’s their 60th anniversary approached the museum because we many many photos here. They asked us to consider making a display for the 60th anniversary,” said Museum Curator, Louise Avery.
The photos are snapshots of Kitimat history and groups. Every different type of community activity ranging from the 50s, 60s, 70s and even a few from the 80s are represented. There are themes of citizens, commerce, Education, worship and community celebrations, service clubs, arts, culture, sports and social planning.
“I look at the 60 years the community has been here and I chose, so many within those headings,” said Avery. “What I tried to do was get an overview of the community activities but I wanted to show citizens of Kitimat rather than buildings. I wanted to get images that showed people.”
The display now belongs to Leisure Services and can be moved around the community so if you miss it in the mall, you can probably see it later this year.
