Camões week took place in Kitimat this past week, from Sunday the 9th with the raising of the Portuguese flag and will conclude on Sunday the 16th.

“Camões Week, what it is, is to commemorate our famous Poet, Luís de Camões because he was very famous for a poem that he wrote,” said Anna Cabral, president of the Assembly.

The week commemorates both the time of his birth and death. He is considered one of the most famous Portuguese historical figure.

The week began with the raising of both the Portuguese Flag and the BC Flag at the Fire Hall, they sang both the National Anthem's of Canada and Portugal and held a Barbecue with Portuguese traditional foods including Sardines.

Tonight, Saturday, June 15th, the event concludes with a dance featuring music by the accelerators and some traditional Portuguese music. Sunday, they will be going to Mass at the Catholic Church in the memory of the Portuguese family members who have passed away followed by the laying of flowers at the Cemetery.
