Pressure Testers (Brandon Mah, Josh Mayeda, Brendan Eshom) from Pineridge Elementary in Prince Rupert

Students and teachers from across the Northwest gathered in Mount Elizabeth Secondary School on Saturday, May Fourth, for the sole purpose of breaking bridges.

“We’re hosting our third annual APAG Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Competition,” said Jason Bunn. “We have sent rules and kits out to schools in Northern BC to build bridges made of Popsicle sticks and glue and we’re all joining here today to test out the bridges.”

The youth could build their bridges using up to 100 of the Popsicle sticks and the bottle of glue provided. The bridges had to be within a certain length, a certain height, and had to be a specific width. Structures were weighed and judged to ensure the bridges made the requirements.

After the structures were judged, they were categorized by grade and then each team went up and onto the stage. Once there, the bridges were put under a crushing apparatus. Force is applied to the bridge under a pneumatic system and they record the maximum force applied to the bridge before it breaks.

Participants came from Prince Rupert, Haida Gwiia and Smithers, as well as Kitimat.

“The lessons to be learned by building bridges out of popsicle sticks is your design will affect the outcome of the bridge strength. For example, in our last competition 2 years ago, the winning bridge was 164 pounds and it was a grade 6-7 class. I could stand on that bridge they built,” said Bunn.

The event was put on by the Professional Engineers and Geo-Scientists of British Columbia. They sponsored the event. Hosting the event was Lapointe Engineering. There were a number of Platinum, Gold and Silver Sponsors.
