REPORTING · 8th April 2013
Walter McFarlane
The Kitimat Fire Department was dispatched to the Aluminum City Lodge on Tuesday, April 2nd in response to a fire in one of their outbuildings.

“At approximately 23:05, a report came in of a structure fire at the corner of Rosarios. It came in as an abandoned building structure fire and as it turned out, when crews responded, it was one of those outbuildings, 20X25, single story buildings at the Aluminium City Lodge,” said Deputy Fire Chief, Peter Bizarro.

Crews established there was no one in and around the structure and hydro and gas were already shut off prior to the fire. They proceeded to knock down the fire and it was out by 23:28. The structure sustained damage.

By that time, the RCMP was on scene and both confirmed that no one was in or around the structure. There was no one injured and there were no damage to the surrounding structures.

“Due to the nature of the fact that it seemed suspicious in nature of a possible arson, the scene was handed over to the RCMP. The following day, Wednesday the 3rd, [Identification] from Terrace came in and did an investigation in conjunction with us. Due to the structure and the extent of the damages and no eye witnesses of any unusual events prior to the fire reported, they were unable to ascertain, to confirm Arson allegations so the cause is left undetermined,” said Bizarro.

The Kitimat Fire Department is asking people to report any suspicious activity to the RCMP, such as people moving around areas where there are obviously abandoned buildings. He also reminds people to stay back from fires and out of the smoke and report it from a safe distance.
