REPORTING · 16th February 2013
The Kitimat Snow Valley Skating Club is hosting the Regional Championships in Kitimat this weekend. On Friday, February 15th, they held a Jamboree for the local youth from Kitimat and Terrace who are too young to skate this weekend. The Regionals start today, Saturday February 16th and run until the 17th.
“Today, we have the Jamboree which is a pre setup for our Regional’s Competitions which are taking place tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday,” said Jessica Goncalves.
The regionals begin at 8:00 Am on the 16th and run until 9:40 PM. They run from 8:00 Am – 3:00 Pm on Sunday. 89 skaters from across the Northern part of the Province are entered, from as far away as William’s Lake Quesnel.
“They will be presenting a couple of times, most of them. They will be doing their solos as well as their interpretive programs, if they have any. Some will be entered in more than one event, some will be in three events. There is also their spins and elements they can perform in as well,” said Goncalves.
However, there is one roadblock which has been a problem in Kitimat for the last couple of years. There are few hotel rooms left to stay in. As a result, there is a low registration.
“We were hoping [they would be staying in] Kitimat but, unfortunately, the reality was lots of accommodations weren’t able to be found so a lot of our skaters, unfortunately have to stay in Terrace. We do have all of our officials and we do have a few skaters which did manage to find rooms,” said Goncalves.
A schedule is attached below.
