REPORTING · 1st February 2013
Plans are underway for Kitimatís 60th Birthday. A committee has been struck and there was a report to Council at their Regular Meeting on January 21st. With the date of Kitimatís birthday, March 31st fast approaching,
Councillor Corinne Scott made a motion to approve a $37,500 funding request for the anniversary celebrations. She listed the committee members and the activities which are planned for the 60th birthday.
ďOn Sunday, March 31st, which is the date of Kitimatís birthday, they are looking at having a pancake breakfast, Birthday Cakes, decorations and fireworks and treats at the Riverlodge Recreation Centre Parking Lot,Ē said Scott.
One part of the plan is to have no charge access to the recreation facilities from 1 pm to 4 pm.
There are more plans for throughout the year, there will be monthly stories about Kitimatís History in the Newspapers, there will be a film contest for the youth and teenagers of Kitimat, a 60th anniversary float for the July 1st Parade and new signage for the District Facilities, a movie night in the park in August and citizen recognition awards.
There was some discussion over whether Councillor Rob Goffinet was in conflict of interest as he had just found out one of his daughters was a member of the committee. He was told he was not. Mayor Joanne Monaghan wanted to know how the committee members were selected but no one could answer.
Councillor Mario Feldhoff stated he would normally push the item to the budget but was willing to give it pre-budget approval due to the time constraint. It was pointed out by Municipal Manager Ron Poole that ordering Fireworks in time was a pressure. The funding request was called and carried by Council.
WOW!! Kitimat Celebrating 60 Years

So what happened to Kitimat's 50th year celebration.
I recall Council sending out a flyer requesting input from the citizens of Kitimat on what they would like to see built to celebrate 50 years of being a corporation. I may be wrong because that was 10 long years ago, but my collection was that the Centennial Fountain was going to get a major over haul and a covered area was to be built for outings and celebrations. From what I have seen is that the only proposal of the fountain from Management was to fill it and plant flowers. Dumb idea! Fortunately the citizens did not like this idea and the fountain was given a new life. So what about the covered area Madame Mayor and Council? What about the Cenotaph? It looks terrible and I personally feel that it is disgraceful that we would let something soooooo meaningful go to ruins. It is a slap in the face of those who served out country and gave their lives so we could enjoy this great country. Shame! Shame! Shame! especially on you Madame Mayor, who has served on council for so long. Have you forgotten? I sincerely hope someone on Council reads this and gives the rest a wake-up call!!!

I dont understand what that has to do with Kitimat celebrating it's birthday, we can't go back in time and change it, it's just the way the cookie crumbles
