Edís Bake Shop closes today, December 22nd, at 2:00 Pm. The Bakery has been in Kitimat for 32 years. It opened on October 1st, 1980, around the same time as Overwaitea foods. As of today, the shop will close.
ďItís been a fantastic business; Iíve loved every minute of it. We thank all of our customers for our success and support over the years. Iím very hopeful that someone takes over,Ē said owner/operator Angelo Fontes who is retiring. Ed Goncalves, the original owner retired in 1995.
During the bakeryís life, it has done a lot for the community. Fontes told us they have helped many programs around Kitimat. The Bake Shop is known for supplying the cake for the Telethon raffles every year. Edís also used to supply many of the corner stores in Kitimat and Terrace, as well as Overwaiteas in both communities with fresh bread.
The bakery has been known for a variety of baked goods, all hand made. ďEdís Bake Shop is unique as it makes things nobody else does,Ē said Fontes. ďYou could come here and get different things, like big feet [and] donuts made from scratch.Ē
Other products they carried included Portuguese Sweet Bread, Portuguese Cookies and many others. Fontes explained they were all made from Scratch and this makes them taste great. Customers have been coming into the shop for its last two days in Kitimat stocking up on baked goods for the coming holidays. Christmas related goods sold out fast.
The bakery has been for sale for 6 months. There have been several potential buyers so hopefully, the bakery will remain in Kitimat. However, it will not be the same Bakery if it reopens.
ďItís been a slice as they say in the business.Ē said Fontes.
