COMMENTARY · 4th October 2012
There are many events I cover which are annual events. There is one event, which, in the two months leading up to it, I will recommend to everyone I see. The event showcases Kitimat very well… very... Very well. It costs very little to enter and it and all the dignitaries show up to it.
I’m talking, of course, about the Multicultural Societies Annual Potluck Dinner. This is my choice for #1 on my list of greatest yearly events in Kitimat.
For anyone who is unfortunate enough to have missed out on this extravaganza, the night begins with the dignitaries: The Mayor, the Multicultural Society, the politicians, grace and then Potluck. Every year, a different country’s food is highlighted as the main course.
After dinner, the different clubs which make up the society perform dances, music and other customs from their countries of origin.
It brings people together. It celebrates diversity. It is a family event. The food is always excellent.
“My mother used to say that she loved Kitimat because she could come to these events and she could enjoy the world. This presence in our community makes Kitimat a unique and exciting place,” said Mayor Joanne Monaghan on March 21st, 2009
It is a beautiful evening and if you have never experienced it, be sure to get your tickets and prepare your favourite dish for Early Spring, 2013.
