Kitimat Valley Institute held a Job Fair on Thursday, August 23rd. There were around 20 different employers including Bechtel and Bear Creek Contractors. There was also Employers from Canfor and Prince Rupert.
“We are doing this as a partnership between KVI and STEP, which is the Skill Trades Employment Program. Really our main goal is to bring everyone in Kitimat and the surrounding areas together with the local employers,” said Melissa Jeager, Regional Manager of STEP.
The goal was to match local residents with employers and try to make the connection between jobs and employment. The hope was showcase the employers but also the people of the Kitimat.
The turn out what phenomenal. Jeager stated she goes to a lot of career fairs representing STEP and the KVI was one of the best turn outs she has seen and people showed up before the fair even began.
“There is really good crowds. People actually took busses here to come and attend this. This is great,” said Jeager. “Given this response, it is something you can see everybody’s into and it is needed. I’m really happy that we have so many people who are showing up and supporting this.”
She hoped this fair will become a regular event here in Kitimat although she was uncertain as to when it would be.
“Thanks to everybody. All the employers and all the people of the community who came down to talk to us and the employers as well too,” said Jeager.
