The Kitimat Open Basketball tournament concluded with the final games on Sunday, April 15th.

“I’m happy it went well again. I’m thankful to the District Folks for helping us organize this. It was a big success. All the teams showed up and both finals speak for themselves,” said Brent Robinson, Co-Chair from the Haisla Nation.

“It went really good, we had an awesome final in the men’s division,” said Shawn O’Neill, Co-Chair from the District of Kitimat. “We had a great event, it went really well. We had a lot of close games right down to the wire.”

Attendance has grown since it began. The Haisla Recreation Center was packed. O’Neill thanked all the spectators for coming down and supporting the teams.

The Haisla Senior Women’s Team took on the Prince Rupert Rain for the second year in a row. The Haisla team won 70-54. The second set of finals was between the Haisla Men’s Team and Lights Out which ended in overtime.

“It was a tough battle,” said Justin Adams, captain of the Lights Out. “They beat us last night and it came down to the wire. We came through the back door. It was a pretty good grind against this young team. They’re pretty good.”

He expressed his team had not had the opportunity to play together. The team was put together at the last minute after several players were injured.
