REPORTING · 12th April 2012

Kitimat residents gathered at the Mount Elizabeth Cafeteria on Wednesday to discuss the 2013 school Calendar. Members of the School District were there to discuss the possibility of a 2 week Spring Break.

We were told by people attending the meeting the outlook of the parents was positive.

School Board Chair, Art Erasmus explained there were three things which people were discussing with them.

First off, families want to travel over Spring Break but the isolated region limits their ability to do this.

Second, it would provide teachers with a longer opportunity to recharge their batteries.

Thirdly, there was a request on how it would affect the CUPE union workers. The board explained the decision to have a two week spring break had nothing to do with saving money.

According to Reid Nelson, Kitimat District Teachers Association President, 2/3 of the province is already having 2 weeks of Spring Break.

This change would not add an additional week of school during summer. It would add an additional 6 minutes per day during the whole school year.
