REPORTING · 14th March 2012

The Coy Cup Tournament began in Kitimat tonight. Four teams will be battling it out for the Cup until Saturday, March 17th. The cup is 100 years old this year, however, it has only been present for 90 such tournaments.

The tournament opened between Quesnel Kangaroos and Smithers Steelhead. The Kangaroos showed their aggression but all it got them were several trips to the penalty box.

The Steelhead scored their first goal right away in the second period and did not let up. With three goals in the 2nd period and 2 in the 3rd, the game ended 5-0 for the Steelheads.

The opening ceremonies took place after the first game. Mayor Joanne Monaghan representing the District of Kitimat and Michele Lamarre representing Rio Tinto Alcan, the two Platinum Sponsors of the event were each given an Aluminium Hockey Puck. A similar puck was given to all the team captains as well.

Monaghan ceremonially dropped the puck for Kitimatís first game.

The game between the Williams Lake Stampeders and Kitimat Ice Demons was far less one sided. Kitimatís David Venman put Kitimat on the board in the middle of the second period. With less then a minute, Williams Lake pulled their goaltender.

18 seconds on the clock, Kitimat Blain Markwart is taking the puck down the ice, falls and gives the puck one final hit giving it just enough energy to slide into the goal. The Ice Demons won 2-0.

Tonightís games are scheduled as Smithers vs. Williams Lake at 5:00 Pm and Kitimat vs. Quesnel at 8:00 Pm.
