On January 10, 2012, inmate Daniel Bruneau from La Macaza Institution, a medium security institution located in La Macaza, was found unresponsive in his cell. Correctional officers immediately performed CPR and an ambulance was called.

The inmate was taken to the Centre de sante et de services sociaux d'Antoine-Labelle, where he was pronounced dead at 7:00 p.m.

At the time of his death, Mr. Bruneau, 51 years old, was serving an indeterminate sentence for manslaughter, sexual assaults and forcible confinement. His sentence had commenced on August 6, 2009.

Bruneau plead guilty to unlawfully confining, choking and then sexually assaulting a teenage hitchhiker and had been declared a dangerous offender.

He’d earlier confessed that in August 2007 he had picked up the 18-year-old girl while she was hitchhiking and had taken her back to his residence in Kitwanga,
