Mr. Atleo
NEWS RELEASE · 10th December 2011
Kristy Kirkup, Parliamentary
The Conservative government introduced new legislation Tuesday to change rules surrounding First Nations elections.

The First Nations Elections Act will extend the length of office terms for chiefs and band council members to four years from two.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister John Duncan said this will help create more stability on reserves.

The government's decision was made in response to pressure from indigenous organizations like the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, who want reforms made to the Indian Act system.

"This is not us imposing anything. This is First Nations driven," Duncan said.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo has called for the government to abolish the Indian Act all together. The statue concerns registered Natives, their bands and the reserve system.
