REPORTING · 21st November 2011
As of 2:00 this afternoon, the results are official. Incumbent Joanne Monaghan is now Mayor Elect. Council will now consist of Edwin Empinado, Mario Feldhoff, Phil Germuth, Rob Goffinet, Mary Murphy and Corrine Scott.
The voter turn out this year was a whopping 2426 voters including 192 new registrations. This makes it a 55% Voter turn out for the 2011 election.
There were 0 accounted spoilt ballots, which are ballots on which the voter has made a mistake and has exchanged their ballots.
Rejected Ballots were a different story. From the Mayoral race, there were 59 ballots which were rejected. Many of these were simply left blank, a protest ballot implying none of the above. In the race for City Councillor, there were 14 rejected ballots.
3 votes were not deposited/unacounted and we were told two mail in votes arrived this morning, too late to be counted.
Only one number changed in the final approval. Randy Halyk squeaked in one more vote as one of his supporters had filed their vote in the wrong box. This brought his tally to 619.

I'm thinking this group will have a much easier going three years than the previous. The economy of Kitimat is starting to show it's huge potential. We're about to become Globalizations link between Canada's vast northern resources and Asia's economic rise. Let's stay focused on being business friendly and keeping Kitimat a great place to live and work.
Put the past behind

Congratulations to the Mayor and members of Council. I sincerely hope that we will not see any more acrimony and that all will pull together for the benefit of Kitimat. Let's look to the future!!
To the candidates that "lost", you should all be proud of the fact that you had the courage to to try and better our town by putting yourself out there. Best wishes to you all.
