NEWS RELEASE · 17th October 2011
Doug Mcleod
Doug McLeod is running to represent the voters of Area C in the Regional District Kitimat-Stikine. Doug’s home is at Lakelse Lake and has been as a seasonal then permanent resident for 45 years. Doug wishes to be a positive force on the RDKS board. He strongly believes Area C residents concerns should be dealt with in a timely, courteous, and fair manner.

As a director, prior to decisions being made, he will work to make sure that the taxpayer be given adequate and understandable information. Also, that they should always be invited to participate in planning and review of issues and functions that will affect them.

He quotes from a local newspaper editorial by Mr. A. Carrel:

“There is more to democracy than free and fair elections. Equally important is that elected politicians show respect for the maturity, responsibility, views, opinions, and preferences of the citizens they were elected to serve.

"Public policy is not merchandise; it is not something to be sold as one would sell a new line of lip gloss. Democratic governments are compelled to engage the public, to acquaint it with a proposed policy’s rational and objectives, and to win broad public consent before making HST-style decisions.”

Doug wants to make the RDKS more user friendly, as well as promote and protect our region.

Doug, now retired, will take a lot of experience in business and public service to the regional board. That experience includes:

Business—Wightman & Smith Insurance - 30 years;

President MK Bay Marina User Group;

President Terrace & District Chamber of Commerce- 2 terms;

Provincial Court Justice of the Peace - 17 years;

Director on the Insurance Brokers Association of B.C.;

President Terrace Centennial Lions Club;

Committee chair for the RDKS Greater Terrace Community Plan - 2 years;

R.C.M.P.- 7 years;

Member of Lakelse Lake Community Association and Lakelse Lake Watershed Society;

Member of Terrace Power and Sail Squadron.
