Kitimat City Council met for the regular meeting of Council on July 18th. Mayor Joanne Monaghan began the meeting with a quick announcement.

The first thing she did was congratulate Chief Councillor Ellis Ross and his new Council. She expressed a wish to meet in the near future and wished him the best.

She expressed Council was happy that Kitimat LNG had entered into an agreement to purchase Eurocan from West Frasier, pending government approval and transfer of payments.

“That’s really good news for Kitimat. We’re Moving ahead and looking for more people in our community. Its not only more people, it’s more taxes. I have to say that because people want more taxes in our community,” said Monaghan.

She moved on to announce the grant has come through for the housing study. The study will determine whether assisted living, senior housing or affordable housing is needed in the community.

Finally, she announced Barry Pollock, the minister of aboriginal affairs will be meeting with Council on July 21st.
