REPORTING · 8th July 2011
Walter McFarlane
On July 2nd the 2011 Dragonboat festival took place, the 6th one for Kitimat. Twelve teams raced 4 races each on the waters of Minette Bay. it was a rained for most of the morning but stopped for the festival.

“It’s amazing that 6 years ago, absolute nothing took place in Minette Bay. It was a really quiet backwater. Now every evening there are voices and laughter and Dragonboats practicing out here,” said Ruth Mills.

This year, there were three boats for the races in Kitimat including two new boats, which were brought up for the festival, one for Bechtel and one for Northern spirit. Nathan and Colin from the Young Dragons dotted the eye of the Dragon, awakening the dragon, with Paul Henning from the RTA team.

Henning commented on how this was an international Dragonboat festival. It was Chinese Dragonboat Festival on the West Coast of Canada opening with a Scottish pipe band on a “Bleak Scottish Morning.”

In D Division, the Regatta Warriors placed first, the Motley Crew placed second and the Wellness Warriors placed third. For Division C, Bechtel placed 1st, Lakelse Dragons placed 2nd and Hawkair placed 3rd. In B Division, the Free Spirits placed 1st, the Wasabe Warriors placed 2nd and the Tragically Quick placed 3rd.

'A' Division was the upset this year. The Classic RTA Dragons, who were the winners of all the previous Regattas, placed 2nd. The RTA Young Dragons took the 1st place position away from their seniors. The Revenge of the Dragons placed 3rd.

It came down to those three teams in the Guts and Glory race of the regatta as the Classics regained some status. The Revenge of the Dragons again placed 3rd but this time the RTA Young Dragons came in 2nd and the Rio Tinto Dragons placed 1st.
