During the Canada Stage Show, awards were given to local citizens who had achieved greatness in the community.

The first award, an award of distinction, went to Sam McLusky, known around town as Pop-can Sam. He was awarded this award for recycling around the community.

“Sam is just wonderful. You probably all know him because he has become the recycling fellow of our community. He picks up the bottles and everything,” said Mayor Joanne Monaghan who was passing out the awards.

For recognition of Distinction awards, Fay Roberts was given an award for volunteering with the Wolverine girls hockey team, Bill Whitty for his work with the Snowflake Seniors Centre, Mary Ann Baumbach for her work with the Humane Society, Margaret Sanou for her work in Retire Kitimat and Michael Jeffrey for volunteer service with the Kitimat Concert association.

For recognition of Excellence, seniors were recognized for their awards in the 2010 BC Winter Games. Betty Glover, Anne Berrisford, Max and Dorothy Cheyne, Ron Adam, Joe Martyres and Eylene Craven.

Ben Thorne was given an award for achieving gold in the Vancouver International Race Walk in the Junior 10k.

Kaitlin Mitchell and Katherine Oscovai were given awards of distinction in recognition of their achievements in the 2011 Karate BC Championships.

Finally, the Kitimat Ice Demons stepped up to the stage to be recognized of the BC AA Senior Hockey Championship gold. They brought with them a banner and a Cup.
