The Advisory Recreation Commission made a recommendation for Council to Change the name of the Kitimat Recreation Department to the Kitimat Leisure Services. Councillor Mario Feldhoff moved the recommendation.
It was called and carried.
The second motion was for Council to change the logo from a family orientated one to, as Councillor Bob Corless put it: “The Squiggle.”
”I’ll speak against it, I sort of liked the family logo and I think that it speaks more of our recreation department then the squiggle you are planning on moving forward with,” said Corless.
Feldhoff, while he was also attached to the older logo, said he consulted with people who liked the new logo. The motion was carried with Corless opposed.
In a memo to Council, Walter McLellan, acting Municipal Manager explained, while the Recreation Department encompassed a lot more then just recreation. In addition, many other recreation departments across the province are also changing their names to Leisure Services.
As for the logo, the family image of two adults and two children will be retiring after 35 years of use. The new logo was drafted back in 2008 but the ARC chose not to put the new logo forward until the pool was finished.
